A globally known Fortune 500 chemical company was experiencing problems transmitting hydrochloric acid through their existing rotary unions.  Chronic leaks and premature failure due to inadequate design led to expense and downtime their plant could not afford.  The application required the system be absolutely dry and leak free.  In partnership with their engineers, Rotary Systems designed a flange mounted inline rotary union made out of corrosion resistant Hastelloy C276, Rotary’s proprietary seals and, o-ring backers specified for hydrochloric acid.  Special care was used in assembly, testing and handling.  Personnel were required to wear nitrile gloves during assembly. Special non-petroleum based grease was injected into the bearings and dry nitrogen was used for testing.  Lastly, the union was baked for two hours and packaged in a sealed bag with desiccant to ensure the union was delivered completely dry.

The customer could not be more satisfied.  The union has been in leak-free use for close to 3 years and has required no maintenance.

Applications for Rotary Systems rotary unions are wide and varied.  If you have a special project, contact an applications engineer at info@rotarysystems.com, or call 800-959-0146 for more information.
